Mobile RPGs that respect your time
Mobile RPGs have a reputation for eating hours through busywork. But a few of them prove that depth and respect for your schedule can coexist, and those are the ones I keep on my phone.
Ember of Varn is my current favorite for this. It lets you skip battles when you are strong enough, and its side quests are short enough to finish in one sitting. You never feel punished for having a life outside the game.
The trick these games share is that progress comes from decisions, not repetition. Choosing a party, spending a skill point, picking a quest route: those feel meaningful in a way that grinding the same field never will.
If an RPG asks you to farm the same enemies for an hour before the story moves, that is a design choice to serve the calendar, not the player. I have gotten a lot happier since I stopped tolerating it.
