Tilt or tap? Steering in mobile racers
Every mobile racer starts the same argument: do you steer by tilting the phone or by tapping the sides of the screen? After a lot of laps, my honest answer is that it depends entirely on the game, not on which is objectively better.
Tilt shines when the physics are forgiving and the sensitivity is tunable. Neon Drift League nails this, letting you lean into drifts with your wrists. When a game locks the sensitivity too high, though, tilt becomes a nightmare of overcorrection.
Tap steering wins for precision and for playing on a crowded tram where you cannot wave your phone around. It feels less immersive, but you make fewer stupid mistakes. My rule now is to try tilt first, and switch to tap the moment a corner punishes me twice for the same overcorrection.
If a racer only offers one scheme with no adjustment, treat that as a small warning sign. Good developers know players hold phones differently, and they give you options.
