Making strategy games work on a phone
I love strategy games, and I have rage-quit more of them on mobile than any other genre. The problem is almost never the strategy itself. It is the fat-finger tragedy of moving the wrong unit onto the wrong tile.
Tidecall Tactics figured this out with a simple two-tap confirm. You select, you preview, you confirm. It sounds obvious, yet plenty of games still let a stray thumb wreck a careful plan.
Zoom matters too. A good strategy game lets you pinch in to check a crowded corner and pinch back out to read the whole board. Without that, you are playing half-blind on a small screen.
So my test for a mobile strategy game is boring but reliable: can I undo a misplaced move, and can I see clearly? If both are yes, I will forgive a lot of other rough edges.
